Dates for Graveyard recording at St.Bart’s

March to September 2007

In 2006, the PCC accepted a proposal from Birgitta Hoffmann that a survey should be undertaken of all the memorial stones inside St. Bart’s and outside in the churchyard. Birgitta is a member of our congregation and a professional Archaeologist working for both Manchester and Liverpool Universities.

Wilmslow is known amongst experts as probably the parish with the highest percentage of pre-1750 century memorial stones in North-East Cheshire. The survey of the memorial stones is designed to check the state of the memorial recorded in the early 20th century, but more importantly to today’s congregation, to unlock the vast amount information (both for local historians and genealogists) on the history of Wilmslow and the Parish available in them.

Copies of Birgitta’s report on the work of the survey team in 2006 are available in St. Bart’s.

The dates for the New Year have now been set and we hope that as many as possible will be able to attend (from 1pm-4pm)

April 14, 2007

May 5, 2007

May 26, 2007

July 7, 2007

August 4, 2007

We are hoping that until August we will be able to finish the recording of all the recumbent stone around the church, as well as be well into recording the sector of the standing stones North of the church.

If you feel, like getting further involved, we are also looking to set up a research group for volunteers to help with research on the families/individuals we have already recorded. This may range from checking them against telephone books and census records, maps or old newspapers or tracking down their wills and inventories.
